moments of clarity.

"A few times in my life, I've had moments of clarity where the silence drowns out the noise, and I can feel, rather than think."
-Tom Ford, A Single Man

Tom Ford is one of the greatest creative minds of our time. Like The September Issue and Bill Cunningham New York, this episode of Visionaries, gives us a glimpse into the mind of a genius. After rejuvenating Yves Saint Laurent and Gucci, Ford started his namesake brand, only to take a break from the company for a few years to pursue other endeavors. One of those endeavors was the acclaimed movie, A Single Man, starring Colin Firth. The screenplay, adapted from a novel, had strong infusions form Ford's personal life, which makes it all the more real and endearing. Following this movie, Ford launched a womenswear line. This interview/documentary shows the inner workings of this perfectionist, artist, & innovator. Particularly intriguing is the point that Ford makes about materialism. Despite the fact that he is part of an industry that relies heavily upon materialism, he is fully aware of the negativity associated with it. He speaks about the meaninglessness of things, as well as the battle he faces remembering this, yet creating and living in a materialistic world. It is refreshing as well to hear someone who is immersed in the fashion culture who abhors the culture of plasticity, fake-ness, and unrealistic beauty standards. If you're in the need of a little inspiration, this 42 minute documentary is well worth your time. With impeccable style, and intellect to boot, Tom Ford is one of the greats of our time.
